This Just In: Swedes Rename 'Hymen'

This piece of news is bound to get mixed reactions. The Swedes have decided to give the 'hymen' a more acurate terminlogy by renaming it 'vaginal corona'. Aiming to demystify certain aspects of virginity and the vague 'hymen', the Swedish Association for Sexuality Education (RFSU) has published a booklet that has lovely descriptions, drawings, and explanations on sex, virginity, and yeah, the vaginal corona.

Apparently, the hymen vaginal corona's appearance varies from one woman to another. Says RFSU's booklet:

Every woman’s corona looks different – just like ear lobes, noses and labia – and differs in size, colour and shape. It consists of folds of mucous tissue, which may be tightly or more loosely folded. It is slightly pink, almost transparent, but if it’s thicker it may look a little paler or whitish. It may resemble the petals of a rose or other flower, it may be carnation-shaped, or it may look like a jigsaw piece or a half-moon.

This is awesome. It's like every woman was born with a hidden pattern of pretty not-soo deep inside of her.

Another thing good about the booklet was its the way it tackled sex, virginity, and how the term "virginity" might be skewed against women and the concept of femininity. In fact, that thing that was used to measure your innocence grows back. Says RFSU secretary general Åsa Regnér:

"The vaginal corona is a permanent part of a woman’s body throughout her life. It doesn’t disappear after she first has sexual intercourse..."

So ladies, technically, you still have that barrier.
